His first book, American Dream: Three Women, Ten\nKids, and a Nation\u2019s Drive to End Welfare<\/a><\/em> (2004) was a New York\nTimes Notable Book and won the Helen Bernstein Award from the New York City\nLibrary. He was an Emerson Fellow at New America.
