Please join me on Wednesday, October 23 for a seminar by\nMary Pattillo, Pay Unto Caesar: Breaches of Justice in the Monetary\nSanctions Regime<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pattillo is the Harold Washington Professor of Sociology and\nAfrican American Studies and Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Policy\nResearch at Northwestern University. She received her Ph.D. from the\nUniversity of Chicago in 1997. Her areas of interest include race and\nethnicity, the black middle class, policy, inequality, urban sociology, and\nqualitative methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In her first book, Black Picket Fences<\/em> (University of\nChicago Press, 1999), Pattillo investigated the economic, spatial, and cultural\nforces that affect child-rearing and youth socialization in a black middle\nclass neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. Black Picket Fences<\/em> won the\nOliver Cromwell Cox Best Book Award from the American Sociological Association.\nHer second book, Black on the Block<\/em> (University of Chicago Press 2007)\nfocused on gentrification and public housing transformation in North\nKenwood-Oakland on Chicago’s South Side.
