Please join us in the library at 11:00 on Wednesday, November\n6, as our seminar series continues with Visiting Journalist Jude Joffe-Block\u2019s\npresentation, entitled \u201cAmerica’s Toughest: The Civil Rights Fight against\nSheriff Joe Arpaio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joffe-Block is co-authoring a book to be published by\nUniversity of California Press with Terry Green Sterling, Writer-in-Residence\nand affiliated faculty member at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at\nArizona State University.  The book explores how Arizona\u2019s divisions over\nimmigration in the mid-2000s prefigured the nation\u2019s current polarization\u2014how\nformer Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio transformed into a zealous\nimmigration enforcer,  a grassroots movement advocating for Latino and\nimmigrant rights organized in the streets and courts to stop Arpaio\u2019s unconstitutional\ntactics, and the fight over immigration and civil rights became a national\nbattle under Trump.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joffe-Block received a BA in History from Yale in 2004 and\nMA in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley in 2010, where she\nwon the Dean\u2019s prize for Excellence in Radio Reporting.  She has written\nradio and online stories for NPR, The Guardian, Newsweek.com and the Arizona\nCenter for Investigative Reporting.  From 2010-2017 she was the Senior\nField Correspondent for the NPR Phoenix station, covering immigration, changing\ndemographics, the border and politics.  As Las Vegas correspondent, she\nhelped to launch the Fronteras Desk, a network of regional public radio\nstations in the Southwest.  Phoenix Magazine named her \u201cbest investigative\nradio reporter\u201d in 2017, and she won an Arizona Press Club award for Community\nreporting in 2019.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
