{"id":13013,"date":"2019-11-14T13:47:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T18:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rsfintranet.org\/?p=13013"},"modified":"2019-11-14T13:47:21","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T18:47:21","slug":"visiting-scholar-seminar-nov-20-larisa-heiphetz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rsfintranet.org\/?p=13013","title":{"rendered":"Visiting Scholar Seminar, Nov 20: Larisa Heiphetz"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear RSF:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please join us in the library Wednesday, November 20, at 11:00 for Larisa Heiphetz\u2019 seminar \u201c<em>Redemption in the Context of the Criminal Justice System.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heiphetz received her BA in Psychology from Pennsylvania\nState University in 2008 and her PhD in Psychology from Harvard University in\n2013. &nbsp;She has been an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Columbia\nUniversity since 2016.&nbsp; As a post-doctoral fellow, she taught in the\npsychology department at Boston University. &nbsp;She was granted the American\nPsychological Association Dissertation Award in 2015, and the Association for\nPsychological Science awarded her its Rising Star in 2017.&nbsp; While at\nHarvard, Heiphetz worked with incarcerated students at the Suffolk County House\nof Correction.&nbsp; Her students\u2019 requests to have psychological research better\nreflect their lived experiences has influenced her current research on how\nadults and children perceive prisoners and the prison system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her year at the Foundation, Heiphetz is writing\nseveral articles.&nbsp; Using experimental and interview data, she is investigating\nthe extent to which adults and children view incarceration as the results of\ntheir choices and behaviors, or societal factors such as socioeconomic\ninequality.&nbsp; She has been testing interventions to explore whether\nproviding alternative frameworks might improve perceptions of those people who\nhave come into contact with the criminal justice system and reduce the stigma\nagainst them.&nbsp; Her initial paper uses studies conducted with 6-8 year-olds\nand adults to demonstrate how essentialism colors perceptions of prisoners.\n&nbsp;Heiphetz\u2019 second paper explores the consequences of those essentialist\nviews of prisoners, and her final paper reviews the role parental incarceration\nhas on the perceptions of the children of those prisoners.&nbsp;
