{"id":13022,"date":"2019-11-27T14:10:33","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T19:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rsfintranet.org\/?p=13022"},"modified":"2019-11-27T14:10:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T19:10:33","slug":"visiting-scholar-seminar-dec-4-eric-knowles-and-monica-mcdermott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rsfintranet.org\/?p=13022","title":{"rendered":"Visiting Scholar Seminar, Dec 4: Eric Knowles and Monica McDermott"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please join us in the library at 11:00 on Wednesday,\nDecember 4<sup>th<\/sup> for a joint presentation by Visiting Scholars Eric\nKnowles and Monica McDermott, \u201cDivergent Identities Among the White Working\nClass: Implications for Attitudes About Race and Immigration\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eric Knowles received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the\nUniversity of California, Berkeley and B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from\nCornell University.&nbsp; &nbsp;Knowles is currently an Associate Professor of\nPsychology at New York University and its Director of Graduate Studies for\nPsychology. He has been at New York University since 2012.&nbsp;&nbsp;He\nstudies how intergroup thought affects behavior and attitudes&#8211;with a\nparticular focus on political judgment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monica McDermott received her Ph.D. in Sociology from\nHarvard University and her B.A. in History and Sociology from Villanova\nUniversity.&nbsp; McDermott is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology at\nthe Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, Arizona State University. Her\nmonograph, \u201cWorking-Class White: The Making and Unmaking of Race Relations,\u201d\n(University of California, 2006) was an ethnographic study of interracial\ninteractions and white identity in Atlanta and Boston.&nbsp; Her areas of interest\ninclude race and ethnicity, social class, immigration and public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While at the Foundation,\nMcDermott and Knowles (in collaboration with Jennifer Richeson, Yale\nUniversity) are working on a book manuscript which focuses on the attitudes and\nbeliefs of white working-class individuals toward racial minorities amid\nchanging U.S. demographics. The book aims to a) establish the political stakes\nfor the white working class, b) lay theoretical groundwork from sociology and\npsychology introducing the notions of coalitional and adversarial intergroup\nrelations, c) present the initial experimental work and subsequent interview\nstudies, with an emphasis on the forms of working-class white identity that\nemerge from the latter, and d) present the survey experiment\u2019s\nresults\u2014hopefully pointing to interventions that encourage working-class whites\nto form class-based, cross-race coalitions. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please join us in the library at 11:00 on Wednesday, December 4th for a joint presentation by Visiting Scholars Eric Knowles and Monica McDermott, \u201cDivergent Identities Among the White Working Class: Implications for Attitudes About Race and Immigration\u201d.
