Bruce Western has invited journalist Gareth Cook to join us for a special guest\u00a0Tuesday Seminar, April 14<\/strong>. It will be in the library and on Zoom from 11:00-12:30 per usual. We hope you all can join us then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gareth Cook is a Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning journalist and founder of\u00a0Verto Literary Group<\/a>, a small editorial studio that helps writers develop serious nonfiction books for broad audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

His writing has appeared in\u00a0The New York Times Magazine<\/em>, where he was a contributing writer, as well as\u00a0NewYorker.com,\u00a0The New York Times Book Review<\/em>,\u00a0Wired<\/em>,\u00a0Scientific American<\/em>,\u00a0U.S. News & World Report<\/em>, the\u00a0Washington Monthly,\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0Boston Globe\u00a0<\/em>Ideas section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook began his career in Washington, DC with writing and editing jobs at\u00a0The Washington Monthly<\/em>,\u00a0Foreign Policy<\/em>, and\u00a0U.S. News & World Report<\/em>. In 1996 he moved to Boston to become the news editor of\u00a0The Boston Phoenix<\/em>\u00a0and then, in 1999, joined the\u00a0Boston Globe<\/em>. He was one of the founders of the\u00a0Globe<\/em>\u2019s Sunday Ideas section and then served as its editor from 2007 to 2011. He was the\u00a0Globe<\/em>\u2019s science reporter for seven years, and also worked as an editor on the city desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2005, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for \u201cexplaining, with clarity and humanity, the complex scientific and ethical dimensions of stem cell research.\u201d He has also won the National Academies Communications Award and the Wood\u2019s Hole Ocean Science Journalism Award. His writing has appeared in\u00a0Best American Science and Nature Writing (<\/em>2008 & 2013),\u00a0The Human Face of Big Data<\/em>, and\u00a0A Field Guide for Science Writers<\/em>. He has appeared on NPR\u2019s \u201cFresh Air,\u201d \u201cScience Friday,\u201d \u201cOn Point with Tom Ashbrook,\u201d and WBUR\u2019s \u201cHere and Now.\u201d\u00a0He has also served the editor of\u00a0Scientific American<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Mind Matters\u00a0psychology blog, and as the series editor of\u00a0The Best American Infographics<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
