A graduate of Duke University, he won a George Polk Award in 1999 for his reporting on the welfare system. His acclaimed book on welfare reform under the Clinton administration, <em>American Dream: Three Women, Ten Kids, and a Nation&#8217;s Drive to End Welfare<\/em>, appeared in 2004.
