Please join us on Wednesday, March 31 at 11:00 for Visiting Researcher Gary Alan Fine’s presentation, “Dark Fun: The Cruelties of Hedonic Communities.”
Fine is the James E. Johnson Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University, where he has been since 1997. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard. Fine is the author of The Global Grapevine: Why Rumors of Terrorism, Immigration and Trade Matter (Oxford, 2010). As an ethnographer, he recently published a book, Players and Pawns: How Chess Builds Community and Culture, on competitive chess. Fine was an RSF Visiting Scholar during the 2005-2006 academic year, and we are pleased to have him return for the 2020-2021 class.
