Press was a Visiting Journalist at RSF in Spring 2016. While at the foundation, he worked on a draft of his current book, Dirty Work: Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2021). Detailed publisher’s description.
Dirty Work won the 2022 Hillman Prize for Book Journalism, was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2021, and was listed as one of the “10 Best Books of the Year” by both Publishers Weekly and The Chicago Tribune (2021). It explores “society’s most thankless, morally compromising jobs,” including immigrant meatpackers in factories, maximum-security prison guards and military drone operators.
Press grew up in Buffalo, graduated from Brown University, and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University. He is a recipient of the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism, and has contributed to the New Yorker, the New York Times, the New York Review of Books and numerous other publications.
