Dear RSF:
Please join us next Wednesday, October 29, at 11 in the library and on Zoom for a presentation by Visiting Researcher Colleen Heflin on her recent RSF book “Food for Thought: Understanding Older Adult Food Insecurity.”
Heflin is Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs at Syracuse University, where she has been since 2017. She holds a PhD in Sociology, an MA in Public Affairs, and a BA in Social Sciences from the University of Michigan. She served as Assistant Dean and Department Chair for Public Administration and International Affairs (2022-24). She is also a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse.
As a research and policy scholar for nearly twenty years, Heflin is regarded as a national expert on food insecurity, nutrition and welfare policy, and the well-being of vulnerable populations. Heflin’s research has helped document the causes and consequences of food insecurity, identify the barriers and consequences of participation in nutrition programs, and understand the changing role of the public safety net in the lives of low-income Americans.
Heflin has published over 70 research articles and her work has appeared in leading journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Problems, Health Affairs, Medical Care, and the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. At RSF Heflin is working on a project examing how administrative burdens influence participation in the WIC program, specifically comparing how the waiver of physical presence requirements during COVID-19 in some counties affected enrollment and participation in the program.
