Visiting Researcher Seminar, December 10: Francesca Polletta

Dear RSF:

Please join us next Wednesday, December 10 at 11 in the library and on Zoom for a presentation by Visiting Researcher Francesca Polletta “Bra Burners in the Ladies’ Home Journal: How Popular Cultural Feminism Changed Americans’ Beliefs About Gender”. Click here for the background article.

Polletta is Chancellor’s Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine where she has been since 2008. She holds a PhD and a MA in Sociology from Yale University and a BA in the Sociology of Law from Brown University. Previous appointments include Columbia University and Williams College.

Her most recent book is with co-author Edwin Amenta Changing Minds (RSF, 2025). Both she and Amenta are former RSF scholars.

At RSF, Francesca is continuing her research on social movements’ cultural impacts. She is examining how popular cultural media like TV comedy, paperback fiction, and women’s magazines covered second-wave feminism and how that coverage affected Americans’ attitudes about gender.
