Dear RSF:
Please join us next Wednesday, April 22nd at 11 in the library and on Zoom for a presentation by Visiting Scholar Van Tran, “Vulnerable Asian Americans: From Intra-Asian Diversity to Narrative Plentitude.”
Tran is Professor of Sociology and International Migration Studies at the Graduate Center, CUNY where he has been since 2019. He had previous appointments at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Tran holds a PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University, as well as an MA in Sociology from Harvard University and a BA in Sociology from Hunter College. Selected awards and honors include election to the Sociological Research Association (2023), and the Malkeil Scholar Award from the Wilson Foundation and the Presidential Award for Teaching (both 2018).
At RSF Tran is examining the life experiences of vulnerable Asian Americans, including disadvantaged refugee groups and low-income older Asians. His work broadens established narratives of Asian American success by focusing on a less visible segment of the Asian population. He is exploring the consequences of growing intra-Asian diversity on future data-collection efforts, including the use of Asian oversamples to collect ethnicity-level data and the inclusion of language-appropriate survey instruments in national surveys. Tran’s research uses multiple methods, including health surveys and administrative data as well as media content analysis.
