Frye has a PhD in Political Science from Columbia University and a BA in Russian Language and Literature from Middlebury College. He is the Marshal D. Shulman Professor of Post-Soviet Foreign Policy and Political Science department chair at Columbia University, where he has been since 2009. His most recent book is Property Rights and Property Wrongs: How Power, Institutions and Norms Shape Economic Conflict in Russia (Cambridge, 2017). His Building States and Markets After Communism: The Perils of Polarized Democracy (Cambridge, 2010) won both the Hewett Prize in Political Economy in 2011 and the American Political Science Association award for best book in 2010.
