DeParle is a senior writer at The New York Times and Emerson Fellow at the New America Foundation. A graduate of Duke University, he won a George Polk Award in 1999 for his reporting on the welfare system. His acclaimed book on welfare reform under the Clinton administration, American Dream: Three Women, Ten Kids, and a Nation’s Drive to End Welfare, appeared in 2004. He is working on a new book, A Good Provider is One Who Leaves: Migration in the 21st Century, based in part on a extended family of migrants from the Philippines that he has followed for many years.
